"Yummy" is a song by American singer and songwriter Gwen Stefani, featuring American musician Pharrell Williams, from her second solo studio album, The Sweet Escape (2006). The song was written by Stefani and Williams and produced by the latter. It was recorded during several sessions in Miami, Florida, in July 2005, for an intended EP or as extra tracks on a DVD.[1] The songs also ended up being playing during a premiere fashion show for Stefani's fashion line, L.A.M.B..[2]
Interscope Records released the track as a promotional single a month before the album's release in November 2006. It was released as a three-track maxi promo single and as a 12" vinyl single, where both of them featured a radio edit, an instrumental, and a cappella version of the song.[3][4]
Though the song was released before the release of her studio album, The Sweet Escape, it was a commercial failure and it did not chart in the United States.[5]
Background and recording
After the release of Love. Angel. Music. Baby., Stefani originally intended to return to No Doubt and start recording tracks for their sixth studio album, which would later be titled: Push and Shove, but instead Pharrell Williams convinced her to record several more songs in Miami, Florida, in July 2005. Together they recorded "Wind It Up", "Orange County Girl", "U Started It", "Breakin' Up", "Candyland", and "Yummy".[6] Although, the songs were primarily recorded for its original intended purposes, "Wind It Up" and "Orange County Girl" were included in Stefani's 2004 concert tour, Harajuku Lovers Tour.
The song is primarily a pop song, but it also contains elements of alternative hip hop music, while the ending of the studio version of the song contains elements of experimental music.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in January 2014 where Stefani discussed her third studio album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, she stated that "Yummy" was her favorite song that she has ever recorded.[7] She further stated that this song was "like making magic" and she had interest in making similar music.
Critical reception
Upon release, the song generally received mixed reviews. Many reviewers found the song to be fun and catchy, but lacked a strong lyrical structure. Robert Christgau cited the song as a "choice cut" (
).[8]
Live performances
Stefani included the song on the setlist for her 2006 world concert tour entitled The Sweet Escape Tour. The song was also played during Stefani's fashion shows.
