World's Biggest Coffee Morning
World's Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan Cancer Support's flagship fundraising event. Each year, members of the general public host their own coffee morning, which primarily take place within the UK where the charity operates, although events are held worldwide. The donations received go towards Macmillan services.
History
The first coffee morning was held in 1990, when a local fundraising committee held a coffee morning where the cost of the coffee was donated to Macmillan. The first nationwide coffee morning took place in 1991, with 2,600 people registering to host one. Each year, more and more people have registered, and in February 2012 Macmillan announced that 2011’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning raised a record £10m to help people affected by cancer.[1]
Over the years, the coffee mornings have diversified into many different fundraising events, from pub quizzes to garden parties. These include world record attempts for the highest coffee morning (on a jet fighter in 2004), the most distant coffee morning (Antarctica in 2002) and the world’s deepest coffee morning (down Poldark Mine, Cornwall in 2002).
Macmillan holds the Guinness World Record for the Largest Simultaneous Coffee Party.[2]
Corporate Supporters
The official partner of coffee morning is M&S Cafe, who are donating money from the sale of certain products as well as exclusively selling a pin badge and The Little Book of Treats, which features recipes from both celebrities and supporters. The other corporate supporters are Kenco coffee and Silver Spoon sugar.
