History

The Worker's Compensation Board, WSIB's predecessor, was formed in 1914 through the passage of the Workmen's Compensation Act. In 1998 the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act was passed in Queen's Park. This resulted in the formation of the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board or WSIB which took over the functions of the previous board. The old Workman's Compensation Board's offices were at 90 Harbour Street from 1953 to 1973 (later the Ontario Provincial Police General Headquarters 1973-1995, now demolished) and later at Sheppard Avenue and Highway 400 (1973-1990s and has since been demolished and re-developed for residential homes). The current head office is located downtown Toronto at Front and Simcoe. The WSIB occupies 24 floors of Simcoe Place. WSIB also has offices in numerous centres throughout Ontario.
