Wonderview High School is a comprehensive public high school in Hattieville, Arkansas, United States. It is one of four public high schools located in Conway County and is the sole high school administered by Wonderview School District. Established in 1934, the school serves students in grades 7 through 12.
History
The school was established in 1934 by the first superintendent. The name "Wonderview" came from the marvelous view from the north side of the school. The words "wonderful view" was combined to make "Wonderview".
Campus
A gym, a few buildings, and the agri building were built that year, and the main high school building was built in 1943. In 1974, the cafeteria and an extension to the high school were built. In 1983, construction began on a new gym until 1985. In 1993, the old high school building was torn down, and a new one was built. In the 1990s, a new agri building was built, and the old agri building became a bus garage. In 2010, a new cafeteria and tornado shelter was built.
Curriculum
The assumed course of study follows the Smart Core curriculum developed by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), which requires students to complete at least 22 units prior to graduation. Students complete regular classes and exams and may select Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and exams that may result in college credit. Wonderview High School is accredited by the ADE.
In 2009, educator Sandra Dunlap, formerly of Wonderview High School, received the Distinguished High School Mentor Award by the University of Arkansas' American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Student Chapter Council.[3]
In 2012, Wonderview High School was nationally recognized as a Bronze Medalist in the U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools report that evaluates more than 21,000 high schools across the nation.[4]
Extracurricular activities
The Wonderview mascot is the Daredevil with green and white serving as its school colors. The mascot is personified by Danny the Daredevil, who engages the crowd at sporting events along with the cheerleading squad.
Athletics
The Wonderview Daredevils compete in the state's smallest classification—1A Classification administered by the Arkansas Activities Association. For 2012–14, Wonderview competes in the 1A Region 5 North Conference. The Daredevils provide teams in bowling (boys/girls), basketball (boys/girls), baseball, softball, and track and field (boys/girls).[5] Wonderview won their first state championship in 2010 in boys basketball. They beat Bay 36 to 33. This was the first time that the Daredevils won a state championship in basketball. Also, the Lady Daredevils basketball team won the 1A state championship in 2012 against Kingston with a score of 44 to 33.
Clubs and traditions
Student groups and activities at Wonderview include band, Beta Club, chess, choir, EAST, FBLA, FCCLA, National FFA Organization, Quiz Bowl, Student Council, and yearbook.
