Overview
Established in 1990, Witte de With explores developments in contemporary art worldwide and presents them through curated exhibitions, symposia, live events, educational programs, and a publishing arm.[3]
The institution is housed in a former school building on the Witte de Withstraat, the cultural hub of Rotterdam.[4]
History
Witte de With was established on January 27, 1990 as a center for contemporary art with the mission of introducing international contemporary art and theory in the context of the City of Rotterdam as well as the Netherlands. The institution initially sought to present an alternative to both the classic museum for modern art and existing artists’ initiatives. Witte de With celebrated its 25th year anniversary in 2015.[5]

Witte de With is often seen as an authored space, with every Director making their mark. Witte de With's part directors include: Chris Dercon (1990–1995), Bartomeu Marl (1996–2001), Catherine David (2002–2005), first as director later as head curator, and Nicolas Schafhausen (2006–2011).
