William Young was an English football goalkeeper who played in the Football League for Brentford. He was the first player since Brentford's election to the Football League to make a century of appearances for the club.[1]
Career
Early years
A goalkeeper, Young began his career with spells at Whitburn and South Shields.[2]
Brentford
Young was in the team for Brentford's first ever game in the Football League on 28 August 1920, which ended in a 3-0 defeat to fellow Division Three side Exeter City.[3] Young battled for the number one jersey with cricketer Jack Durston, but eventually made the position his own, making 94 consecutive appearances between September 1922 and October 1924.[1] He left the club at the end of the 1924/25 season, having made 180 appearances.[4] Young was the club's record appearance-maker until his total was overtaken by Jack Lane.[1]
