Wheeling Central Catholic High School is a parochial, Roman Catholic high school in Wheeling, West Virginia. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.
Wheeling Central Catholic High School has been educating young men and women since 1865. The school has always been a vital part of the East Wheeling downtown area, and remains an integral part of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston campus which includes the Cathedral of St. Joseph, the Diocesan Offices, and the Chancery.
Central's overriding mission is to provide all students with an outstanding education within a Christ centered environment so that they "think and act like Christ."
Academics
Wheeling Central Catholic High School boasts an exemplary academic record, growing and evolving as the world continues to change in the twenty-first century. Wheeling Central is continuously updating its curriculum, utilizing the College and Career Readiness Objectives of Common Core along with the educational and religious philosophies which have served as the traditional bedrock of a Catholic education at Wheeling Central. As Wheeling Central increases its curriculum rigor, the school has continued to add Advanced Placement classes for students wishing to experience college level academics. The AP courses for the 2013-2014 year include the following: AP Chemistry, AP U.S History, AP Calculus, and AP English Language and Composition. In an effort to prepare underclassmen for the challenges of these courses Wheeling Central is vertically aligning all courses with the Advanced Placement curriculum.
With an astounding 98.7% graduation rate, the staff of Wheeling Central Catholic High School takes great pride in maintaining the highest possible standards while assisting students who may have difficulty in certain subject areas. It is within this educational, religious, and family-oriented environment that students can achieve admirable goals, preparing them with educational skills and spiritual awareness as they become students and children in Christ.
Athletics
Wheeling Central's athletic teams are called the "Maroon Knights." They include:
- Boys: football, hockey, basketball, soccer, lacrosse and baseball.
- Girls: cheerleading, volleyball, soccer, basketball, and softball.
- All: tennis, track and field, cross-country, swimming, water polo, and golf.
- Club Sports: ice hockey.
