The Aetnaville Bridge was built late in the season in December 1891. It links the village of Aetnaville, which is part of what is now considered Bridgeport, Ohio to Wheeling Island, which is part of Wheeling, West Virginia. The bridge once carried people to and from the Ohio and West Virginia sides of the Ohio River until the bridge was shut down to vehicular traffic in December 1988, due to safety concerns. The bridge was once a trolley bridge long ago. The bridge is now used mostly as a way for pedestrians, bicyclists, and joggers, to cross without having to go all the way around to the new Bridgeport Bridge.[4] The bridge is expected to close from October 19th to 23rd, 2015, to be evaluated for safety. The local residents are fighting to save this bridge, because it is a necessary and popular pedestrian footwalk, and part of a five statewide bicycle and jogging trail.[5]
