Critical response
On review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an overall 50% "Rotten" approval rating based on 8 reviews, with a rating average of 4.6 out of 10.[6]
In a scathing one-star review, Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian described the film as "clichéd" and that the script "wouldn't pass muster for any British TV series".[7]
The film's cast was praised by Allan Hunter writing in Screen Daily, who stated that the film "offers a fantastic showcase for a talented, charismatic young cast who make the most of the script’s jocular wit",[8] while Guy Lodge, writing for Variety, described the film as "amusing, appealingly performed and sensibly brief third feature."[9] Andrew Blair, reviewing for Den of Geek, thought that the film was able to "provide the most successful representation of male teenagers I've seen at this festival".[10]
The film's style was praised by Catherine Bray in Time Out, who thought that "the strength of ‘We Are the Freaks’ is that it never feels like a cookie-cutter teen movie" and that it had "raw energy that allows its lack of polish and occasional tonal missteps to come over as endearing".[11]
