Gleditsia aquatica, is commonly called Water Locust, or Swamp Locust after its habitat of river swamps and slough margins. It is native to the Southeastern United States and adjacent regions. It is closely related to its family, the Locusts. Like the other locusts, it produces a pod. However, these pods usually only hold one seed. The leaves are usually Simple-Compounded, but sometimes appears Acacia.
Basic Info
This tree commonly grows to 50'. Sometimes to 60. It is commonly found in swamps. It prefers partial sun.
The fruit is a fruit-bearing pod(Fabaceae)
Range & Habitat
This swamp tree is commonly found in the south. However, It can be found in the north too. It is hardy to zones 6-9
It is native to the Southeast, from Florida west to Eastern Texas, north to Illinois. It can be found as far north as Ohio, southern New York and southwestern Connecticut.
