University of Wasit (Arabic: جامعة واسط‎) is one of the Iraqi Universities established in 2003 in Al Kut, Wasit, Iraq.

The establishment of the University

The Wasit University was established in January 2003. This university was including three colleges belong to Al Qadisiyah University before establishment. Those colleges were: College of Education which founded in1996-1997 and received the students at the same year, College of Economics and Management founded in 2000-2001 with two departments namely, Department of Economics and Department of Management. The third college was the College of Science, which was created in 2001 – 2002 contained two departments, Biology Sciences and Physics. The university stayed limited with those three colleges until 2005-2006. At this year, the university had undergone a massive expansion to develop a number of new colleges, departments and centers who were not existed in university since that time and then four new colleges are founded (College of Arts, Medicine, Engineering and college of Law) as well as Department of Physical Education, the Public Central Library of the University, a Cultural Center for women and the Office of Engineering Consultant in the College of Engineering and a Centre for Excellence and Creativity, which receives the creative persons to develop their capabilities within the university and the general people from the province, giving courses in modern technology and information fields. The university had to undergo further expansion in its colleges by founding new colleges, including: (College of Education, College of Agriculture) In addition to new departments, Department of Oriental Studies at the College of Arts and Chemistry Department, at the College of Science. The University of Wasit did not stop to develop scientific departments or colleges, besides to award (Masters and PhD).

Objectives of The University

1 - Providing the advanced scientific cadres in various human and scientific fields to meet the needs throughout the country and accelerate the achievements of the objectives of scientific, economic and social development and to provide the cadre which is qualifying academically for teaching in universities. 2 - Conducting the scientific research and provide scientific advices for all institutions, and develop them by caring of accurate specializing. 3 - The participation of developing the expertise in all disciplines through the researchers and the graduate studies. 4 - Raising the new reality through the activities, seminars, conferences and build the Academic capacities to develop higher education and scientific research movement.

Future prospects of the University

The University of Wasit is planning to find the Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy; On the other hand, the university works to develop of colleges and improve its research centers, while the research centers that proposed to be created are: the Center of Translation in the College of Arts and research centers such as the Centre of Hematology and Diabetes, which are belonging to the College of Medicine and Center for Studies of the Department of History and development the Centre of Engineering consultant at the College of Engineering. The university has huge plans for a future for the field of building construction and engineering projects, especially that the University has suffered from a lack of buildings as it is still a recent and need more time to complete the buildings that suit with the size of evolution and development. The efforts of the sincere overcame all difficulties and obstacles to reduce the time, and make quality leaps to build a balanced scientific structure to the colleges of the university.
