KL118, formerly Warisan Merdeka (English: Heritage of Independence), (Jawi: واريثن مرديکا ), (ไทย : ต่อเสา Tower), is a 118-storey, 644-metre (2,113-foot) megatall skyscraper currently under construction in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Background
The KL118 development is funded by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB),[4] with a budget of RM5 billion.[5]
When completed in 2020, the tower will be the tallest building in Malaysia and 5th tallest in the world, consisting of 400,000 square metres (4,300,000 square feet) of residential, hotel and commercial space,[6] succeeding the 88 storey Petronas Twin Towers.[2][7]
The building consists of 100 storeys of rentable space, in turn consisting of 80 storeys of office space, 12 storeys of hotel, 5 storeys of hotel residences and a retail business center. The non-rentable space consists of elevators, recreational and maintenance facilities, as well as parking levels for up 5,000 bays. 60 out of the 80 storeys of office space will be reserved for Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), the developer of the project, and its subsidiaries.[1][8]
The tower is within the vicinity of Plaza Rakyat, MBSKL, Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara.[5] The KL118 development, when completed, will have access to MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line which is part of the Klang Valley Public Transport System.[9][10]
Progress
The piling and foundation works for the project, which has started have been awarded to Pintaras Geotechnics Sdn Bhd.[11][12]
Permodalan Nasional Bhd has shortlisted 6 groups for various construction jobs such as UEM Group Bhd-Samsung, IJM Corp Bhd-Norwest Holdings Sdn Bhd- Shimizu Corp, Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd-China State Construction Engineering Corp, WCT Bhd-Arabtec Construction LLC, TSR Capital Bhd-Daewoo Group, and Seacera Group Bhd-Spaz Sdn Bhd-Sinohydro Corp-Shanghai Construction Group. These companies are to submit their engineering, procurement and construction bids by January 28, 2015.[13][14]
KONE, a Finnish group will be supplying around 105 elevators and escalators for the project.[15]
On 23rd of November 2015, PNB announced the contract worth RM 3.4 Billion have been awarded to the joint venture of South Korea’s Samsung C&T and UEM Group Bhd.[16]
Criticism
Many have criticised this project, saying that it is a wasteful project and the RM5 billion funds could have been used for other causes like healthcare or education.[4]
In response to the criticism, the Prime Minister stated that the project was not a waste and will bring more benefits by generating economic opportunities.[4]
