WakuWaku Japan (stylized as WAKUWAKU JAPAN) is a Japanese general entertainment channel that broadcasts Japanese programs to overseas viewers in Asia. The channel broadcasts Japanese-only programs 24 hours a day. Japanese, Malay, Mandarin, and English language programs are broadcast on this station. Subtitles and dubbing for the channel are available in select countries.

History

WakuWaku means 'feeling of excitement', 'pleasing', 'thrilling', and 'more' in Japanese. SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation started the channel project for overseas in 2011. In order to keep everything on track, the Japanese government has allocated funds amounting to 15.5 billion yen (or approximately US $126.17 million) to finance the channel. These funds will be used both for the cost of dubbing and making subtitles, as well as the costs of promotion, office, and program production.[1] On February 22, 2014, at 5:00 PM, WakuWaku Japan officially launched in Indonesia with its first program, 'WakuWaku Japan Music Festival'. On its first day broadcasting, WakuWaku Japan used a 12-hour system, but when it was launched in Myanmar, it changed to a 24-hour system. At that time, the channel was only available on Indovision and OkeVision. On June 1, 2014, WakuWaku Japan became available on Transvision, OrangeTV, BiG TV, and First Media.[2] On the same day, WakuWaku Japan officially launched in Myanmar, though only available on 4TV, a Burmese terrestrial pay television. On March 4, 2015, SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation plans to expand Japanese content to overseas by establishing WakuWaku Japan Corporation.[3][4] On July 1, 2015, WakuWaku Japan Corporation was officially established, taking over its ownership from SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation. On July 6, 2015, WakuWaku Japan officially launched in Singapore and is currently available on Singtel TV and StarHub TV.[5][6] On January 26, 2016, WakuWaku Japan announced that will began broadcasting in Thailand on March 26, through Ch3SD, a Thai terrestrial pay television.

Programming

WakuWaku Japan has original programming oriented towards various topics such as music, sports, and children's content. They also re-broadcast imported programs from a variety of genres, including anime, superhero programs like Kamen Rider, live-action drama series, culture programs, entertainment shows like Iron Chef, sports, and documentary series. WakuWaku Japan also re-broadcasts music programs and has a portion of re-broadcast programming set aside for children under the block name "WakuWaku Kids", as well as an entertainment block called "NHK Family Time".
