Wakad is a locality in Pune Metropolitan City withing the municipal limits of Pimpri-Chinchwad in the state of Maharashtra, India. Wakad is one of the fastest growing localities of Pune Metropolitan Area.

History

Wakad was known in the peripheral villages for its ‘jatra' (a religious carnival) at the temple of Mhatoba. Wakad has a rich, fertile, black soil. The farming community here used to grow sugarcane, onion and groundnut. The nearby PCMC took Wakad under its wings and gave it a full fledged drainage system and provided electricity, water and good roads. Thus, the civic infrastructure at Wakad is at par with the best.[1]

The phenomenal growth of Wakad can be attributed to the coming up of the Infotech and Biotechnology park at Hinjewadi close to the Pune-Mumbai Expressway (west). In the last four years, the Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation has granted the maximum number of building permissions for projects in the area to Wakad and its surrounding areas. As a result it is seen as an ideal residential destination in Pune.It is also close to three proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, namely Nashik Phata-Wakad, Aundh-Ravet and Kalewadi phata-Dehu Alandi road. Construction of the BRT corridors is currently under progress.[2] Towards the east are Pimple Nilakh, Pimple Saudagar and Aundh, towards the south is the Mula River, Baner, Pashan and Balewadi Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex and towards the north is Thergaon, Akurdi, Chinchwad and Ravet.
