"Waiting to See You" is a song by American musician-singer-songwriter Dan Hartman, released as a single in 1986 from the original motion picture soundtrack for the film Ruthless People. It was written by Hartman and Charlie Midnight, and was produced solely by Hartman.[1][2]

Background

The single failed to make an impact in the UK, however in the Netherlands the single peaked at #34 and lasted on the chart for a total of three weeks. It debuted at #34, before dropping to #35 and #48 respectively.[3] Originally the song was also due to appear as the opening track on Hartman's 1986 album White Boy, however the album was shelved by Hartman's record label as they did not feel that the material suited Hartman and his image.[4] The album has remained unreleased to date, although some very limited test pressings were made and today fetch very high prices.[5]

Release

The single was released on 7" and 12" vinyl in the UK, the Netherlands and Japan only, via Epic Records. It was distributed by CBS Records.[6][7] The 7" vinyl release in both countries featured the b-side "Waiting To See You (Film to Dance Mix)", which featured narration from Robert Funk and was described as a "Special Version" on the single's back sleeve.[8][9] The 12" maxi-single issued in the Netherlands also included exactly the same track-listing as the 7" vinyl.[10] However the UK 12" vinyl featured both of the 7" vinyl tracks, along with two additional tracks; "Instant Replay (Album Version)" and "This Is It (Remix)". Both of these songs were written and produced by Hartman, and were previous hit singles for him in the UK, in 1978 and 1979 respectively.[11] The artwork of the single featured a close-up photograph of Hartman, taken by Betty Marshall. The back cover highlighted the Ruthless People soundtrack album.[12]

In the Netherlands the single was exclusively released on CD as well. The 3 inch CD single featured exclusive artwork of a man looking through a telescope. It featured two tracks - "Waiting to See You" and "Relight My Fire", which was an American #1 Dance Chart Hit for Hartman in 1980 (written and produced by Hartman).[13][14] It featured Loleatta Holloway on special guest vocals with Hartman.[15] In Japan a 7" promo sample vinyl was issued in a similar sleeve and with the same track-listing as the UK/Netherlands 7" vinyl release.[16] Two different American 7" promos were also issued with the same sleeve design. One featured the usual 7" vinyl track-listing, and the other featured the same main track on both sides.[17][18][19]

Promotion

A music video was created to promote the single. Entwined with clips from the Ruthless People film, the video also featured clips of Hartman recording and performing the song in the studio, along with a backing band.[20] The video was directed by Ken Ross and Richard Levine, whilst the production companies were Ross & Levine Inc. and N. Lee Lacy and associates. In the Billboard magazine of June 28, 1986, the video was listed under the 'New Video Clips' section.[21]

In the Evening Independent of August 19, 1986, writer Bud Norman had mentioned the video in his article "A journey into video darkness". In the article, under the sub-heading "More of the same", he stated "Too many of the videos though, are a chore to sit through. Dan Hartman's "Waiting to See You" video features footage from the movie "Ruthless People", and after the "Attack of the Summer Movies" clips, I feel as if I've already seen the movie three times, only not in order."[22]

Additionally in 1986, Hartman was in the UK during producing and appeared on the Wogan Show (BBC) and The Wide Awake Club (TV-AM) performing "Get Outta Town" and "Waiting to See You", which was also performed live at the newly revamped Liverpool Docks in a TV show called "Rock Around the Dock".[23] On that show, Hartman also performed the unreleased White Boy track "I'm Only Foolin' Myself" which was also recorded by Paul Young in 1991 and produced by Hartman.[24] Hartman also performed the song on the UK ITV children's TV programme Razzamatazz, and this performance aired in the episode of August 20, 1986.[25]

Critical reception

In the Billboard magazine issue of July 5, 1986, the song was mentioned in the 'Dance Trax' section, written and reviewed by Brian Chin. Under 'Assorted Album Cuts', three songs from the soundtrack album were picked. When speaking of "Waiting to See You", Chin stated "Dan Hartman's "Waiting to See You" may be another club late-nighter, as was "I Can Dream About You"."[26]

In the Ottawa Citizen of July 11, 1986, a 'fair' (two out of four stars) review of the soundtrack album was published, written by Mike Abrams. He stated "Ruthless People does have its good moments. The gutsy vocals of Nicole on "Don't You Want My Love," Kool and the Gang's energetic "Dance Champion" and Dan Hartman's powerful "Waiting to See You" add some snap to this somewhat uninteresting soundtrack." Additionally Abrams had highlighted the two best cuts from the soundtrack as "Dance Champion" and "Waiting to See You".[27]
