"Wait & See (Risk)" (stylized as Wait & See ~リスク~; translated to Wait & See ~Risk~) is a song by Japanese recording artist Hikaru Utada from her second studio album Distance (2001). It was released as the album's second single on April 9, 2000 by EMI Music Japan. Written by Utada and produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, "Wait & See (Risk)" is a R&B and rock song. Two b-side tracks, "Hayatochiri" and "Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)", where featured on the single.
"Wait & See (Risk)" received positive reviews from music critics, many who highlighted it from the parent album and labelled it a "masterpiece".[1] It achieved commercial success in Japan, with a peak position of number one on the Oricon Singles Chart and a million certification by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ). The single remains the thirteenth highest selling single in first week sales, and the fiftieth best selling single in Japan. A music video was shot in Shibuya, and features Utada flying around Shibuya on a futuristic speeder bike, while in another location she performs the song with two clones of herself.
Background and release
"Wait & See (Risk)" was written by Utada and produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, her second collaboration with them following "Addicted to You".[2][3] The song was recorded in mid-1999 at Flyte Tyme Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota and mixed at Flyte Tyme, Edina, Minnesota.[3] Recorded in January 2000 at Flyte Tyme Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dave Barry played the guitar and Xavier Smith played the drums.[3] "Wait & See (Risk)" is a rock and R&B song with elements of dance music.[4][5] The b-side "Hayatochiri" was written by Utada and produced by her father Teruzane Utada and long-time collaborator Akira Miyake, while "Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words)" was a cover originally composed and written by Bart Howard.[3]
"Wait & See (Risk)" was released on April 19, 2000 in CD format by EMI Music Japan, as the second single for the singer's second studio album Distance (2001).[6] The cover sleeve features four pictures of Utada, posing in different positions.[3] The CD includes the single, the two b-sides, one remix by Baton Girl and an instrumental track.[3] A DVD version was released on June 30, 2000, which included new artwork of Utada in the speed bike, the music video and the making of the video.[7]
Critical reception
"Wait & See (Risk)" received positive reviews from music critics. Nagasawa Tomonori from Barks.com selected the albums singles as the best tracks.[8] Editor in chief for Rockin'On Japan magazine Kano commended the "excellent" composition of the song and the "innovation" of production by Jam and Lewis.[9] A staff review from CDJournal discussed Utada's first greatest hits compilation Utada Hikaru Single Collection Vol. 1 and said although the vocal delivery "floats" and is "basic", they felt the track molded into one of Utada's "masterpieces."[1] Ian Martin from Allmusic commended Jam and Lewis' collaboration, saying that "providing stark contrast to the cheap, tinny sound that characterized much Japanese pop of the previous decade, with "Wait & See" and "Addicted to You" both featuring the production talents of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis."[10]
Online music critics Wilson and Alroy said that while "Wait & See (Risk)" is a "bouncy dance track", they found it "distressingly drab".[4] Miko Amaranthine from Yahoo! Music listed the b-side "Fly Me to the Moon" at nine on his Top Ten Hikaru Utada songs, stating ""Fly me to the Moon" is a fantastic song for both writers and singers [...] Unlike many famous artists on the market today, Utada is consistently singing about the importance of expressing ones feelings into her work that is done. This keeps me grounded in my own work and reminds me that no matter how many articles I write, I must keep writing about personal experiences and remember to keep my work based on my life and not run into a fantasy world."[11] At the 17th Annual Japan Gold Disc Awards, "Wait & See (Risk)" and Utada's next singles "For You" and "Time Limit" received the award for "Song of the Year".[12]
Commercial response
"Wait & See (Risk)" debuted at number one on the Japanese Oricon Singles Chart, her third single to top the charts.[13] The song stayed in the weekly chart for twenty-one weeks.[13] The DVD edition peaked at number one on the Oricon DVD chart, her first number one on that chart.[13] The song was certified million by RIAJ for shipments of one million units, and sold 1.6 million units in total, making it the fiftieth best selling single in Japan music history and her third best selling single behind "Addicted to You" and "Automatic/Time Will Tell".[14] According to Oricon, the song was Utada's fourth million selling single.[upper-alpha 1][upper-alpha 2] "Wait & See (Risk)" became Utada's fifth single to reach number one on the Japanese Count Down TV chart.[15] In the annual 2000 Count Down TV chart, "Wait & See (Risk)" was placed at number four.[16]
Promotion and other appearances
Wataru Takeishi was commissioned to direct the accompanying music video.[17] The video starts with Utada getting ready to ride a speed bike through Shibuya, Japan. The verse than features a shot of Utada in a warehouse, and two clones of Utada appear after the song progresses.[17] There are several shots of Utada stopping in different parts of Shibuya, including a playground, a shopping centre and road with a moon shining above. The video ends with Utada parking the bike in the same warehouse, and walking off outside.[17] The music video was included on her Single Clip Collection Vol. 2 (2000).[18] "Addicted to You" has been included in four of Utada's live Japanese tours concert: Bohemian Summer 2000, Utada Unplugged, Utada in Bukodan 2004-2005, and Utada United 2006. The live versions were then released on a live DVD for each tour.[19][20][21][22]
