Route description
WV 480 begins at an intersection with WV 115 in Kearneysville. WV 480 heads northeast as Kearneysville Pike, a two-lane road that passes under CSX's Cumberland Subdivision and through farmland past the historic Rose Hill Farm and the historic home Rockland. WV 480 veers north as it enters the town of Shepherdstown, where the highway's name changes to Duke Street. The state highway intersects German Street, which heads west as WV 45 and east as WV 230, within the Shepherdstown Historic District. WV 480 passes through the campus of Shepherd University, which contains the Van Swearingen-Shepherd House along Shepherd Grade Road and Ram Stadium, which the state highway passes as it veers northeast to its northern terminus at the Maryland state line. The highway crosses the Potomac River on the James Rumsey Bridge, named for steamboat pioneer James Rumsey, and continues as MD 34 (Shepherdstown Pike) toward Sharpsburg.[1]
