WOMX-FM (105.1 FM, "Mix 105.1") is a radio station located in the Orlando, Florida area, under ownership of CBS Radio. Its studios are located in Maitland and the transmitter tower is in Bithlo.

History

105.1 FM was owned by Rounsaville Radio in 1973, was sold to Nationwide Communications in 1982, then Omni American and then again to Shamrock Broadcasting in 1996,^[1][2] Chancellor Media in 1997 (which would subsequently merge with AMFM and then Clear Channel),^[3] then to Infinity Radio (CBS) in 2000.^[4][5]

The station began broadcasting as WOMX on September 14, 1989 after a 16-year run as Top 40 WBJW ("BJ 105").^[6][7] The station changed to WOMX (formerly the call letters for a coast guard ship based in Biloxi, Mississippi) due to declining ratings and a growing adult radio market. Initially, "Mix 105.1"'s format was characterized as "Adult Top 40", but was quickly modified to a slightly more mature "Hot Adult Contemporary" sound, with a greater emphasis on hits from the past.

The station signed on with Mike Elliot and Beth Ann Schaffer in mornings,^[8] Tracey Young in middays, Dave Kelly in afternoons, and Nick Sanders ("Nick At Night") in the evening slot. Overnights were held by Keith Summers. The station was first programmed by Brian Thomas. In late 1990, they launched the morning show Scott and Erica in the Morning, with Scott McKenzie and Erica Lee, after Mike Elliott left for a job in Tampa.^[9]

Longtime morning show co-host Erica Lee was fired January 7, 2010 after 19 years at WOMX.^[10][11] Scott remained as the anchor and face of WOMX's morning show, joined by Dana Taylor and Jay Edwards. Following the most recent suite of more rhythmic content on CBS Radio-owned hot AC stations in Boston, Cleveland and Hartford, the station began adding more rhythmic content to go up against top 40 station WXXL, owned by Clear Channel Communications. Ratings had been up for WOMX-FM after the playlist tweak, and also caused rival adult contemporary station WMGF phasing in more hot AC content. WOMX-FM is the oldest hot adult contemporary in Florida under CBS Radio ownership, while CBS Radio's other hot ACs in Tampa and West Palm Beach had the format since 2010 and 2011, respectively. As of July 2014, they have since switched formats, with WHFS-FM having flipped to Sports (as well as being sold to Beasley Broadcast Group), and WPBZ has been sold to a new owner and flipped to country, making WOMX-FM, not only the oldest and first Hot AC station in Florida under CBS Radio ownership, but is now, once again, CBS Radio's only Florida Hot AC station.

As of 2012, WOMX-FM began sharing most of the rhythmic and pop content with sister Rhythmic contemporary station WJHM. As of 2014, WJHM has become a rhythmic-leaning Top 40 station, billed as "101.9 AMP Radio", and is still using some of the rhythmic music a little, but focusing more on its pop content.^[12]

On August 11, 2015, Scott McKenzie died at the age of 59 after suffering from non-Hodgkin lymphoma for seven years.^[13][14]
