Vivekanand Jha (Hindi: विवेकानदं झा) (born 1977) is a translator, editor[1] and award winning Indian poet.[2][3][4][5][6][7] He has written and edited several critical and academic books including poetry in English. His poetry is widely published in India, US, UK, Canada, Australia, Nigeria and Thailand. Recently he has edited a poetry anthology, The Dance of the Peacock: An Anthology of English Poetry from India,[7][8] featuring 151 Indian English poets and published by Hidden Brook Press,[9] Canada. He is the founder and chief editor of two literary journals, VerbalArt: A Global Journal Devoted to Poets and Poetry[5] & Phenomenal Literature: A Global Journal Devoted to Language and Literature[6] published by Authorspress,[10] New Delhi, India.
Early life
Vivekanand was born and raised at Mahinam-Pohaddi near Benipur in the Darbhanga district of Bihar. He is the son of the noted professor, polyglot, poet and Sahitya Akademi-award-winning translator Dr. Raja Nand Jha.[11]
He studied at the IGNOU and Lalit Narayan Mithila University. He has a diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering, a certificate in computer hardware and networking, and an MA and Ph.D in English.[4]
Career
Literary
Vivekanand is the author of 4 books of poetry.[4] His works have been published in more than 100 magazines around the world, and his poems have been published in more than 25 poetry anthologies.[4] He was a contributing poet to Wavelengths – 2011 Savant Anthology of Poetry (USA) which won first place in the 2011 London Book Festival.[12] He was the Poetry Contest Winner – Third Place Winner for the poem “Hands Heave to Harm and Hamper” conducted by BeginnersR, a documentary, graphic, non-fiction book series (USA).[4] His poem, “Song of Woes”, was featured in the 10 Selected Poems for Performance & 10 Selected Poems for Award in the 2nd Korea-Nigeria Poetry Feast on 21 March 2012 organized by the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria.[4][13]
Academic
Vivekanand's Ph. D dissertation titled, The poetry of Jayanta Mahapatra: Themes & Imagery[4][14] has been published by Authorspress,[10] New Delhi, India and is the most voluminous and comprehensive book so far published on the poetry of Jayanta Mahapatra.[4] He has also edited nine critical anthologies on English Literature. The central focus of his edited books are on critical and analytical analysis of British female authors,[15] Amitav Ghosh's novels,[16][17] Indian Booker Prize winning novels: Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children, Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things, Kiran Desai's The Inheritance of Loss & Aravind Adiga's The White Tiger[18][19][20] and Sahitya Akademi Award-winning novels in English: R. K. Narayan's The Guide, Raja Rao's The Serpent and the Rope, Mulk Raj Anand's Morning Face, Chaman Nahal's Azadi, Anita Desai's Fire on the Mountain, Arun Joshi's The Last Labyrinth, Nayantara Sahgal's Rich Like Us, Amitav Ghosh's The Shadow Lines, Shashi Deshpande's That Long Silence, Kiran Nagarkar's Cuckold, Amit Chaudhuri's A New World, Rupa Bajwa's The Sari Shop & Esther David's The Book of Rachel.[11][21][22] He has had more than 25 essays, research and critical articles published in various national and international anthologies and peer-reviewed journals.[4]
