From 1972 - 1980, the 6th District was merged with the 5th and 7th Districts and they were jointly represented by three Senators. After the 1981 redistricting, there were no more multimember Senate districts. From 1982 - 2002, the district included parts of the cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
