Vijayawada railway division is one of the six divisions of South Central Railway (SCR), a zone of the Indian Railways.[1] The headquarters of the division are located at Vijayawada. The revenue of the division for the year 2014–15 stood at 4603.27 crore (US$680 million).[2]

History

It was formed as one of the eight divisions in Southern Railway on 16 May 1956. After the formation of South Central Railway zone, the division was integrated into it on 2 October 1966.[3]

The division is located completely in Andhra Pradesh and covers the districts of Krishna, Guntur, West Godavari, East Godavari, Prakasam, Nellore and Visakhpatnam.[1][4] There are total 270 passenger trains with 78 daily expresses, 44 average non-daily expresses, 129 passenger trains, 15 average non-daily passenger trains, 2 work men special, 2 rail buses and 180 average no. of freight trains.[3]

Note: There are 6 stations not handling coaching traffic. They are Gunadala, Komarampudi, Krishnapatnam, Nidiguntapalem, Sarpavaram and Venkatachalam Road.

Performance and earnings

Vijayawada railway division generates much of its revenue from freight transport, which includes major commodities like coal, fertilisers, food grains, cement etc. Krishnapatnam and Kakinada Ports are the two main revenue earners for the division in freight transport.[5] For the financial year 2014–15, the gross earnings of the division was a whooping 4603.27 crore (US$680 million). It includes 764.85 crore (US$110 million) in terms of passenger transport and 3710.68 crore (US$550 million) in freight transport. It recorded a 47.89% increase in its freight revenues as compared to its previous year which stands at 2509 crore (US$370 million).[6][2]

The financial year of 2015–16 earned 5.62 percent more gross revenue than its previous year.[7]
