Vijayachander, born Vijayachander Telidevara, is an Indian film theater actor, method actor, director and producer, predominantly appearing in Telugu cinema and South Indian films. He made his acting debut in the film Sudigundalu, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu in 1967.[1]
He is known for portraying the roles of devotional characters like Jesus and Sai Baba of Shirdi.[2] He has acted in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam language films.[3] In 2007, he has donated land for old film artists and Movie Artists Association[4]
Personal life and family
He is the maternal grandson of Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu and yesteryear's Telugu film singer Tanguturi Suryakumari was his maternal aunt.[5][6][7]
Acting career
He started his performing arts career in theatre, he has given stage performances in plays such as Lobhi, Room No 9, Inspector General, Master Ji, and Wanted Fathers etc. between 1986
He was starred as lord Christ in the 1978 devotional blockbuster film Karunamayudu, which won the bronze Nandi Award for Best Feature Film, was dubbed in Hindi as Daya Sagar, Tamil as Karunamoorthy and English as Ocean of Mercy. He was then starred as Sai Baba of Shirdi in the 1986 film, Sri Shirdi Saibaba Mahathyam its evergreen block buster directed by K. Vasu, which was later dubbed into Hindi as Shirdi Sai Baba Ki Kahani and into Tamil as Sri Shirdi Saibaba.
In 1982, he has produced a movie named Andhra Kesari, the biographical film of his maternal grandfather with himself in the lead role under his own direction. The film won the Nandi Award for Best Documentary Film. In 1986, he played as Sai Baba of Shirdi, in 1986 as Vemana in the film Vemana Charithra, later in 1987 he played Jesus for the second time in the film Dayamayudu.
He has acted in over 40 feature films. His most notable roles till date were in the films Karunamayudu and shiridi sai baba mahathyam.[8]
Television
During 1996 to 1998, he was cast in a 50-episode serial titled Dayasagar, which was telecasted on DD National. The series was also dubbed into Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam and other languages for repeat telecasts.[9]
