The Biography Channel (Canada)
The Biography Channel is a Canadian English language Category A specialty channel. It primarily features biographies on famous people and events throughout history and today including predominantly celebrities and also politicians, historical figures and more; Other programming includes documentary series and reality programs. The Biography Channel is wholly owned by Rogers Media.
History
Licensed as The Biography Channel by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) on November 24, 2000; the channel was launched on September 7, 2001 as a joint venture between Rogers Media (33.34%), Shaw Communications (33.33%) and A&E Networks (33.33%)—who owned the network's American counterpart. In 2006, both Shaw and A&E sold their interests in the channel to Rogers. When the American Biography Channel rebranded as FYI on July 7, 2014, this channel did not follow suit, as the former Twist TV instead became the Canadian presence for FYI on September 1, 2014.
On November 5, 2015, Rogers and Vice announced The Biography Channel would relaunch as Viceland in the winter of 2016.[1][2] Viceland will launch with a full slate of original programming, including Gaycation with Ellen Page and Ian Daniel, Black Market with Michael K. Williams, Terror with Vice Magazine co-founder Suroosh Alvi, and Canadian-made programming. The channel will launch concurrently with the American cable network H2's rebranding as Viceland in 2016[3] (by coincidence, the American H2 channel is also owned by the aforementioned A&E Networks).
