The Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency are the youth academy and development system of Canadian Major League Soccer club, Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The residency program currently consists of two tiers. Residency squads include U-18 and U-16 teams while pre-residency have U-15, U-14 and U-13 squads. Beginning in 2011–12 the U-18 and U-16 teams compete in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, the top tier of youth soccer in the United States.
For the first year they played their home games at locations across the Lower Mainland, including Swangard Stadium, Thunderbird Stadium and Simon Fraser University. On September 6, 2012, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, in partnership with the government of British Columbia and the University of British Columbia announced plans to develop the National Soccer Development Centre located within UBC. The $32.5 million facility will feature a new state-of-the-art fieldhouse in addition to five soccer fields, three natural grass and two artificial turf. The Development Centre will be home for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC men, women's and residency teams, UBC soccer teams and Canadian men's and women's national teams. In addition, the facility will be used by various youth soccer programs from across the province of British Columbia.
The Whitecaps FC Residency is a full-time, fully funded, player development program. It is designed to develop a player’s on and off field potential through a philosophy integrating training, education, and accommodation, all conveniently situated in one place. U14 is the pre-academy group featuring players U13 to U15 separated in two squads; Senior and Junior teams for a total pool of 32-36 players. Players train in the evenings and attend their own schools. Exhibition matches are scheduled within the Pacific Northwest region against elite club teams, MLS Academies and other USSDA Pre-Academy teams.
Players graduate into the U16 and U18 program joining the USSDA. These teams feature 18 to 20 players per squad and travel throughout California, Oregon, and Washington. Given the training and playing demands, players train and attend a holistic development program at Burnaby Central Secondary School. Program graduates enter the first team development environment that includes training and competitive opportunities in both Reserve team and PDL games.
The Whitecaps FC web site has a residency/elite section with lots of information including youth coach video interviews. The residency also has a billet program for players from outside Vancouver. With the move from a Burnaby-based program to the University of BC at Point Grey, partnerships and billet may be changing in 2013. Also the United States Soccer Federation has announced a U14 USSDA program starting in the fall 2013 which may further change the Whitecaps FC Residency/Elite program.
