Vanambadi(English: Nightingale or Skylark) is a 1963 black-and-white Tamil language Suspense Film was directed by G. R. Nathan and Produced by K. Murugesan. The film script were written by Valampuri Somanathan. Music by K. V. Mahadevan assets to the movie.It stars S. S. Rajendran and Devika in the lead roles with R. Muthuraman, S. V. Sahasranamam, T. R. Rajakumari, T. R. Ramachandran, R. S. Manohar, Pushpalatha and Sheela in supporting roles. Kamal Haasan appears as a child artist in the film. The film was adaptation from Sheesparish Bengali novel.[1]

Plot

A young women Meena(Devika) escapes from the clutches of a womenzing Zamindar Marthandam(O. A. K. Devar). She is targeted shoot him and escapes from the place and run away the railway track and she attempts suicide and saved by an elderly couple named as Thanikachalam(S. V. Sahasranamam and his wife Parvathi(T. R. Rajakumari), who adopted her. Because, she was similar to the elder couple own daughter Uma was passed away from two years ago. Meena such as habit of similar to uma, Meena was wrote poet, singing and composing music instruments. They wish her wed their nephew Sekahar(S. S. Rajendran). But he was agree the wedding and started avoiding her. But Meena was falls love with sekhar. Adopted brother Mohan(R. Muthuraman and a friend Nithyanandham(T. R. Ramachandran try to help of meena holding hand of Sekahar. Sekhar was impressed to her and loves with each other. Meena and Sekhar wedding is arranged. But, during the ceremony another man Gopal(R. S. Manohar) shows up claims to meena to be his wife and she's named as Sumathi. Gopal kept at the evidence for their wedding photo and witness of her father Somasundaram(V. S. Raghavan).

Meena is arrested for attempts murder of the zamindar and she hand over the court and Trial to her. But she has their never seen before and says she is unmarried girl, adopted father was takes bail to her. Mohan and a friend Nithyanandham try to solve behind the mystery. She told to them her past life and her Uncle Sundaramoorthy's Cunning plan. There find the man and he was comes to mohan house, mohan called meeana, Sundaramoorthy sees meena acting like to blink to her. Then, Mohan and nithyanandham such as Zamindar Marthandam and meet him. Mohan and nithyanandham was arranged dance party and Zamindar was share his past, he was afflicted from paralytic after the incident(Meena try to shoot him shoulder). Meeana has no evidence and witness for proof, she is not sumathi.

Sekhar was temperated and his comes nithyanandham house sees meena and argue to her. After the incident she run away from the family to relieve them of the anguish she has caused them and they later find her in Madras as stage playback singer calling herself as Kausalya Devi. Mohan and nithyanandham met her. But claims she has never seen them before. Gopal was followed mohan and nithyanandham and finally his find Kausalya Devi Place and she also seen gopal. she was escape living town and goes to her friend Jayanthi's village stay with her grand mother. Gopal hatches secret evil plan. Gopal sent some hitchmen and attack sekhar. The news was published on newspaper Meena read the news and she leaves the place and comes from Thanikachalam house.

Unfortunately gopal was catch meena and Kausalya Devi was arrested for Policeman and stop the court to her. Advocate siva Shankar(Javert Seetharaman) was trial to Kausalya Devi and she approve the truth Gopal is her husband and she is real named as Sumathi. She told to her past life in to judge and in front of court. She is real named as Sumathi and daughter of Somasundaram and Mistress of Gopal. She is father Somasundaram is rich man and arranged wed to Gopal, but she is feel unhappy for married life. Because Gopal was brutally attacks and Violent offensive against of his wife. Finally, Gopal target for her whole properties was under goes to himself and his ask put signature for the document to Sumathi. Then after think about her parents condition and her future. So, she was escape to her husband and went to her friend Jayanthi and stay her home, manage her financial problem. So, she changed her name as Kausalya Devi and Pose at Stage play back singer and singing song. And Objection she has never seen before thanikachalam and his families.

Siva Shankar was trial of witness Somasundaram(V. S. Raghavan) , Gopal and Sumathi's mother Meenakshi. Meenakshi release secret of Sumathi, Meenakshi was many years has not child, then conformed doctors was meenashki as pregnant, but she is unlucky. Because the baby was born on male baby but it is die, The next word one poor women was born twin babies, one of the female child was gives for meenakshi, who adopted the baby and meenakshi was hide the secret to her husband. Meena also arrest the police for the reason, she attempts suicide and saved her and stop in front of court. The mystery was solved. Meena and Sumathi was twin sister. Gopal was feel about his wife hearty and clam and changed his behavior. Finally, Sekhar and Meena get Married.

Synopsis

Meena runs away from the family to relieve them of the anguish she has caused them and they later find her as a stage/playback singer calling herself as Kausalya Devi. But Kausalya Devi claims she has never seen them before. How do they resolve the mystery forms rest of the story.

Reception

Based on Sheeshparish, a Bengali story, the film was universally acclaimed and was a commercial success upon its release, owing its success to the story, performance of Devika and the string of melodious, evergreen songs.

Soundtrack is composed by K. V. Mahadevan and lyrics for all songs were written by Kannadasan.[2][3] The song "Thookanankuruvi" is based on Suddhadhanyasi and Charukesi whereas "Gangaikarai" is based on Abheri ragaKannadasan.[4][5]
