The University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, (abbreviated as UET Lahore), is a public research university located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan.[1] The university is noted as being highly selective in terms of admissions as around 1800 students, out of 48000 applicants, were selected in 2015 for undergrad studies.[2]

Established in 1921, it is one of the finest institution of higher learning in the country and ranks 3rd in Engineering and Technology by HEC in the latest ranking.[3] In addition, the university ranks at 281 among world engineering universities.The university is one of the oldest university in South Asia to start engineering degrees. UET computer science department established as a computer center in the year 1968. UET is also the first university to start a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science in Pakistan. UET also has the honour of being one of the first university in Asia to start a Master degree in computer science in 1978.[4] The university also conducts Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT) every year in the province of Punjab. The university is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.[5]

The university offers academic programmes in undergraduate, post-graduate, and doctoral studies in the disciplines of engineering, business management, law, philosophy, natural and social sciences[6] The university is organized in 7 science faculties with administration of 24 research departments[6] Since its establishment, country's most notable scholars and academicians have been affiliated with UET.

History

UET was established in 1921 in Mughalpura, a suburban area of Lahore, as Mughalpura Technical College. In 1923, the name was changed to Maclagan Engineering College to honor Sir Edward Maclagan, the then Governor of the Punjab, who laid the foundation stone of the building.

In 1932 the institution became affiliated with the University of the Punjab for award of bachelor's degree in Engineering. At the time of independence of Pakistan in 1947, it offered Bachelor of Science courses in electrical, mechanical and civil engineering.

In 1954, bachelor's degree program in Mining Engineering was started. In 1961, it was again renamed as West Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology. During the 1960s, bachelor's degree courses were started in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum and Gas Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Architecture, and City and Regional Planning.

By the 1970s it had established over a score of master's degree courses in engineering, architecture, planning and allied disciplines. PhD degree programs were also started.

The campus is situated on Grand Trunk Road (GT Road), Begum Pura, Lahore (31°34′42.34″N 74°21′31.90″E / 31.5784278°N 74.3588611°E / 31.5784278; 74.3588611Coordinates: 31°34′42.34″N 74°21′31.90″E / 31.5784278°N 74.3588611°E / 31.5784278; 74.3588611) and is within few kilometers from the Shalimar Gardens. It has eleven gates, seven are numbered from zero to six; normal daily traffic is restricted to use only gate number three for both Entery and Exit.

Besides the main campus in Lahore, a sub-campus known as UET Ksk Campus (also in Lahore) was established at Kala Shah Kaku. It is called UET Lahore Ksk campus. Besides City campus, other campuses includes RCET (Rachna College of Engnieering and Technology) which is a constituent college of UET Lahore.

The campus of Rachna College of Engineering and Technology, Gujranwala is spread over an area of about 74 acres (30 ha), surrounded by a canal on the south and lush agricultural land on the remaining three sides.

The Faisalabad campus, located in Khuryanwala, has been converted into a university sub-campus of UET Lahore.

Another Campus was established in Narowal City with cooperation of Ahsan Iqbal MNA of District Narowal. The Campus was inaugurated on 1 March 2012 by CM Shahbaz Sharif. The original campus is still under construction on a 200 acres while the classes are temporary being held in Govt. PG Degree College, Narowal.

Teaching faculty

The UET faculty consists of 741 people including 14 international faculty members; around 122 have doctoral degrees. Its faculty holds one Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, one Sitara-i-Imtiaz, one Izaz-e-Kamal Presidential Award and nine HEC Best Teacher Awards.

The university has established a Directorate of Research, Extension and Advisory Services which strives for the promotion and organization of research activities. The Al-Khwarizmi Institute of Computer Sciences is a notable name in research activity in computer sciences in Pakistan.

Co-curricular and extracurricular activities

The university has a sports complex, consisting of a swimming pool, tennis court, table tennis court, squash court and a cricket stadium that is also used for athletics. The university has several football grounds.

Apart from sports-related facilities, there are societies to promote co-curricular activities. The Environmental and Horticultural Society (EHS) works for the betterment of the environment. UET's Blood Donor Society is among the newest societies of UET and now has more than 4000 blood donors and more than 25 members. UET's Debating Society holds several national titles.

The National Library of Engineering Science, inaugurated by Faisal bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, is the central library of the university with a seating capacity for 400 readers and more than 125,000 volumes of books, 22,000 volumes of bound serials and 600 issues of scientific and technical serials on diverse fields.[8] The Library has the honour of having recently been chosen by the Higher Education Commission to serve as the primary resource center for engineering & technical education. It is a three story building in front of Allah Hu Chowk.
