Devonport Services R.F.C.
Devonport Services Rugby Football Club is an English rugby union team based in Plymouth.
The team, for members of the British armed forces, was originally called United Services Devonport, was limited to military officers and its first recorded match was a 2-2 tie against Plymouth in 1904. Devonport Services in limiting themselves to officers only did not perform well on the whole until 1912 when it opened its playing membership to other ranks and results improved dramatically.
A South Wales Echo sportswriter gave Devonport the nickname The Sporting Blues after a match with Swansea. Many internationals have played for the club. Home games are played on The Rectory Field, previously home of Devonport Albion. All British Armed Forces players are eligible to join the club.
The club has been a semi open club since the mid nineties, therefore they allow civilians to play alongside serving armed forces players.
The club runs a 1sts, 2nds and 3rd teams, colts, an occasional Vets team. Under 7s ~ U16s, Girls rugby at Under 15,16 and 18.
This season (2013/2014) our club Chairman is Captain Peter Colson, RN.
