UTC Central Bedfordshire is a University Technical College (UTC) that opened in September 2012 in Houghton Regis. The UTC specialises in education for future engineers, product and games designers.
Location
UTC Central Bedfordshire is located at the Kingsland site in Houghton Regis. The site has undergone a multimillion-pound refurbishment to provide state-of-the-art engineering and design facilities.
UTC Central Bedfordshire is located near Dunstable in Houghton Regis and is accessible by local bus services from Leighton Buzzard, Luton and Toddington.
Admissions
UTC Central Bedfordshire is currently taking applications for Year 10 and Post-16. The UTC is currently waiting to receive approval from the Department for Education to have an intake of Year 9 students, starting from September 2015.
Curriculum
UTC Central Bedfordshire specialises in product design, games design and engineering. Students aged 13-16 study GCSEs alongside technical qualifications which include practical learning, work related projects and opportunities for enterprise.
The UTCs Sixth Form students have the option to specialise in engineering, games design or product design. These qualifications lead on to higher education, apprenticeships or work placements. The UTC gives its students access to industry equipment and specialist facilities, and enables them to work closely with employers on real workplace projects.
UTC Central Bedfordshire has a professional working environment so the school day matches the traditional working day, starting at 8.30am and finishing at 5.00pm four days a week and 4.00pm on Fridays.
Sponsors
In 2014, Bedford College was appointed as sponsor of UTC Central Bedfordshire. Bedford College has won the Beacon Award for its work with schools and has been judged by Ofsted to be ‘outstanding’ for pre-16 education in two consecutive inspections.
