Tung-Chai Ling

Bill LING Tung Chai (林忠财) is a research scientist on concrete materials who integrates studies on cement and concrete materials with engineering science and technology for sustainability development. His current research interests have focused on the recycling of various types of waste materials including hazardous wastes, materials science and engineering technology in cement/concrete composites, and the use of smart materials in concrete products for self-cleaning, air purifying and building energy saving. He is currently serving as a Project Leader at the Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited (NAMI).[1] Currently, he is leading a collaboration research project funded by Innovation and Technology Fund worth 7 millions of HKD [2] and State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironmental Protection, China.[3] He has also participated as a key researcher in several research projects funded by industry and government agencies from Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Career

Prior to the appointment at NAMI, he was a lecturer with the School of Civil Engineering, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom (UK), from March 2012 - December 2013. He is also an active researcher (Postdoctoral research, Visiting Researcher, Research Fellow) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University under the direction of Professor Ir Dr. Chi-Sun POON, JP.[4] Since then Dr Ling has specialized in the development of sustainable and environmentally-friendly concrete products through innovative materials science and engineering technology. He is currently serves as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Civil Engineering and Construction Technology,[5] and a regular reviewer for a number leading international journals such as Cement and Concrete Composites, Journal of Cleaner Production, Environmental Science and Technology, etc.

Publications

He has published more than 43 high impact peer-reviewed journals with accumulative Impact Factor of 90.0 (based on 2014-ISI’s Web of Knowledge JCR database). He regards publication as a priority in his career path and publishes journal papers in ISI-indexed journals such as Journal of Hazardous Materials, Cement and Concrete Composites, Journal of Cleaner Production.[6] One of his paper has recognized as Most Downloaded Articles for Cement and Concrete Composites-July to September 2011.[7] Besides a number of bibliographic conference papers and a book, he has won a number of research and academic awards, including the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Top Outstanding Young Malaysian 2015 30 Finalist in the category of Academic Leadership and/or Accomplishment [8] as well as two product patents for his research work on concrete materials, waste management and recycling, and pavement engineering. The two intellectual property rights are (a) Rubberized Concrete Paving Blocks, Patent Number: MY-143982-A (Date of Grant: 29.07.2011) and (b)Highway Accelerated Loading Instrument, Application Filling Number: PI 2008 4370.[9]
