Trimitas (magazine)

Trimitas (The Trumpet) is the official magazine of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union and played a key role in developing its ideology.

History

The first issue was published in May–June 1920. The magazine quickly gained recognition in the society, because it had some prominent names on the editorial team: the first editor was canon Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas, after him came Rapolas Skipitis, Teodoras Daukantas, Liudas Vailionis, Matas Šalčius, Mikas Mikelkevičius, Jonas Kalnėnas, and many others. The circulation grew from 5,000 in 1920 to 25,000 in 1939.

From 1921 onwards Trimitas became a weekly. The content was wide and varied, it did not restrict itself only to news for the riflemen or contributions from the riflemen, it also contained local and international news, poetry, literature, articles on warfare, sports, and culture.

Vladas Putvinskis-Pūtvis set several goals for the magazine. The most important ones were to propagate the riflemen ideology and to introduce the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union and its ideology to the society, in order to attract members.
