TridentGroup (BSE: 521064, NSE: TRIDENT) is a diversified group of businesses headquartered in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. Trident Limited (Trident) is the flagship company of TridentGroup, a USD 1 billion Indian business conglomerate. The group operates in five major business segments: Yarn, Terry Towels, Paper, Chemicals and Captive Power.[3] Trident Limited, the flagship company of the group has its customer base in more than 75 countries across 6 continents. Trident is one of the largest yarn spinners in India, one of the world’s largest terry towel manufacturers and the world’s largest wheat straw based paper manufacturer.[4]

Incorporated in 1990, the company continues to grow under the lacklustre leadership of the chairman Mr. Rajinder Gupta. Mr. Rajinder Gupta, a first generation entrepreneur. With a modest beginning of 17,280 spindles of yarns, the group today exports to over 75 countries emerging as one of the largest integrated home textile manufacturer in the world.

History

The group was earlier known as Abhishek Industries. It was incorporated on April 18, 1990 in the state of Punjab. In 1992, the company started implementing its yarn spinning project in joint sector with PSIDC to set up manufacturing facilities for cotton yarn with an installed capacity of 24,960 spindles. Subsequently, the capacity was upgraded to 32,400 spindles. In the year 1998, PSIDC and the company set up another unit of 43,392 spindles at a capital outlay of Rs. 9500 lacs out of which 36,288 spindles started commercial production from July 1, 1999.[5][6]

Business Segments

The Group operates mainly in four different Segments namely Home Textiles, Yarn, Paper and Chemical and Energy.

Yarn

Trident Yarn (formerly known as Abhishek Yarns) had a modest beginning in 1993 with just 17,280 spindles at Barnala (Punjab).

Trident has one of country’s largest single-location spinning capacities. Trident has imported Machinery from Rieter-Switzerland, Murata- Japan, Zinser- Germany and Savio- Italy besides LMW-India and has a wide range of product basket across cotton yarn, blended yarn, special open-ended & other specialized yarns, organic cotton and spun yarn categories.[7][8]

Trident Limited has an installed capacity of 365,904 spindles and 5500 rotors, capable of manufacturing 8,400 tonnes of cotton and blended yarn per month. The Company also has Yarn processing capacities of 6,825 TPA. Yarn segment contributes 46% to the Company’s aggregate revenues. Yarn segment has export presence in 19 countries and witnessed 27% exports contribution to the total Yarn revenues of INR 16,837 million during FY13.

Home Textiles

Trident had installed capacity of 688 looms of different specifications namely Jacquards, Air Jet Dobby and Rapier Dobby. Company has strong exports market across 70 countries contributing 85% to the segment’s total revenues of INR 12,694 million. Trident’s Home Textiles products are sold under various established brands, namely Home Essential, Classic, Kids & Mom, Floral, Colors and Indulgence.

Paper and Chemical

Today, Trident is one of the chemical manufacturers and suppliers of paper for multi-colour high speed printing and publishing and branded copier paper.

Trident is world’s largest wheat straw based paper producer. Trident draws 10% of its Paper segment revenues (INR 7,248 million) from exports across 35 countries including India, Middle East, Africa, U.S., Latin America and the U.K. through a strong network of 60 distributors. Paper segment contributes 20% to the Company’s total revenues.

The company has per day production capacity of 450 MT of paper and 265 tonnes of pulp. During FY13, the Company produced 152,811 MT of paper products and recorded sales of 153,028 tonnes which was 4.5% higher than FY12.

Among Copier, Flagship brand is Spectra Copier. Other brands include My Choice, Trident Natural, Royal Touch and EcoGreen Copier.

Among Maplitho Brands, Trident produces Platinum Line, Diamond Line, Silver Line, Super Line & Prime Line

Energy

Keeping in view the increasing requirements of Trident's continuously expanding operations, they generate captive power to meet the demands of the industry.

With theme of Energy conservation and green environment, Trident Energy is producing steam and power using eco-friendly process. The total Black Liquor effluent of pulp process along with Biomass and Coal is used to generate high pressure steam in cogeneration process. The First unit of 9.4 MW got commissioned in 1999; the production capacity of which has now been increased to 50 MW.

The company is setting up a captive power plant at its Budhni facility after which the captive power generation capacity will increase to 110 MW.

Merger of Trident Corporation

The Board of Directors of Trident Limited [TL] and Trident Corporation Limited [TCL], in their respective meetings held on 9 October 2013, approved the proposal to merge TCL into TL. The amalgamation is subject to statutory / regulatory, shareholder and creditors approvals as relevant.[9]

CSR

Some of the institutes established by the group include:

Takshashila Centre for Excellence - this is a vocational institute, which was inaugurated in 2004.[10]


Sacred Heart School - the group has adopted this school, along with a grant of Rs. 10 lakhs for the library and sports development and management for the school children. Some family members - mainly spouses - of the Trident employees teach at the school.[11]
