Tony Hawk's is an extreme sports–adventure video game series endorsed by professional skateboarder Tony Hawk and published by Activision. The series was primarily developed for home consoles by Neversoft (1999–2007), [1] and for handhelds by Vicarious Visions (2001–2007). The series has since been developed by Robomodo since 2008.
The first five Tony Hawk's received critical acclaim for their unique gameplay, varied soundtracks, and expansion over their predecessors. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and Pro Skater 3 are critically ranked among the best games ever released for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, respectively.[2][3][4]
Gameplay
Throughout the series, the gameplay remains generally the same, with small changes. In general, the basic controller configuration is mapped as such: the bottom face button of the controller is reserved for ollies, the left face button is for flip tricks, the right face button is for grab tricks, and the top face button is for rail and lip tricks. While on the ground, the ollie button is held down in order to store momentum for catching more air off a kicker or quarterpipe, released at the last possible second that the wheels are in contact with the surface to maximize lift. While airborne, the flip and grab buttons are combined with a directional input to execute tricks (grab tricks, once executed, can be held for more points by holding the grab button but must be released before returning to the ground or result in a bail). During air tricks, the skater can be spun front or backside by holding left or right, increasing the score each time a 180 turn is successfully completed. While skating on the ground, approaching a rail or lip edge will allow the skater to slide along it by pressing the grind button, with grind or slide variations based on how the surface was approached and a direction held. As the skater is grinding, pressing left or right will balance them and allow them to maintain the slide. Coming up to a quarterpipe lip at a 90-degree angle and pressing the grind button will execute a lip trick. Stringing together multiple tricks results in a "combo": a score that combines the total value of all the tricks executed in the same string multiplied by the number of tricks performed. Later games introduced moves specifically designed to create longer combos. Skating "switch" (meaning opposite the skater's native stance) results in a point bonus for the physical difficulty (as the skater's stats are lowered whilst in switch stance, unless the "Switch" stat itself is upgraded to its max). Trick point values decrease the more a trick is performed in the same session, requiring variety. To extend combos, players can use the manual to link tricks together while moving between physically separated ramps or rails, and the revert which consists of making a 180° spin as soon as the skater hits the ground after a vert trick.
As tricks are successfully executed, a meter in the upper left of the interface fills. When maxed out, you are able to perform "Special tricks" by using a more complex set of inputs. Special tricks earn more points but are generally more risky. Bailing (failing a trick) results in a loss of the current combo and any points that might have been earned as well as any Special meter energy.
In career mode, the player picks a pro skater and goes through the game's levels completing various goals. These usually include collecting the letters SKATE in an area, collecting the letters COMBO in a single trick chain, skating through gaps, collecting/breaking five items of the same object, completing high score marks and capturing a video tape placed in a hard-to-reach place. In early games, the player has only 2 minutes to go through the level and must complete as many goals as possible. This would later be replaced by allowing players to freely skate the level and to perform goals at any time. Other modes of play include Free Skate (skating without a time limit in order to explore the stage), Single Session (a two-minute session with no objectives to complete, allowing the player to simply skate for points), and Multiplayer.

Development
Neversoft era (1999–2007)
The first game was considered revolutionary and the series dominated the genre. Due to the success of Pro Skater in 1999, Activision released a number of follow-ups. Pro Skater 2 (2000 for the PlayStation, 2001 for the Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, PC, Mac, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance). A compilation of the first two games, Pro Skater 2x was released in the US later in 2001 for the Xbox.
Pro Skater 3 (2001) for the GameCube, Game Boy Color, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation was published for the Nintendo 64, Xbox, PC, Mac and Game Boy Advance in 2002. It is notable as being the first PlayStation 2 title to be playable online, pre-dating the release of the Broadband Network Adaptor. It was also the last Nintendo 64 game. Pro Skater 4 (2002) was released for the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, PC, Mac, Xbox and Tapwave Zodiac.
The fifth game in the series, Underground (THUG), was released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox and Game Boy Advance. This game differs not only in name from the previous titles but also focuses on the idea of story mode, where the player progresses their character from a local skater to a sponsored pro skater. Underground 2 was released in October 2004, the game is a direct sequel to its predecessor, featuring the same protagonist and antagonist as Underground. With the release of the PlayStation Portable, Underground 2 was repackaged as Underground 2: Remix, a launch title for the new handheld console.
In 2005, American Wasteland was released on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Xbox 360 and later on PC. It spans all of Los Angeles in one big open world environment, with the exception of the classic mode levels and is bigger than all of the previous games. The Nintendo DS and the Game Boy Advance version was called American Sk8land and featured cel-shaded animation, wireless connectivity and a slightly different storyline. Downhill Jam was released in 2006 as a spin-off to the series in which one races downhill while performing tricks. Most of the playable characters were fictional, with the exception of two playable pros: Tony Hawk and Kevin Staab. The game was released on the Nintendo DS, Wii, Game Boy Advance and later on PlayStation 2.
Project 8 came out for the PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, Xbox and PSP in 2006. The entire area used for story mode was interconnected like American Wasteland, but this time, there were no loading times and no loading tunnels. The ninth installment to the series was Proving Ground, released in 2007 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS.
Robomodo era (2008–present)
Motion, a spin-off to the franchise, was released for the Nintendo DS on November 18, 2008. Motion utilizes gameplay incorporating tilt/motion controls.[6] The game also featured the option to snowboard. Another spin-off of the franchise, Ride, was developed by Robomodo,[7] and released in November, 2009 for the Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3 to poor critical and commercial reception. The game uses a board peripheral that uses accelerometers and sensors to create a more realistic experience. The board itself received negative criticism from reviewers.[8] Tony Hawk mentioned on Twitter the existence of the next game, a direct sequel to Ride, reportedly titled Shred.[9] The game was officially announced by Activision on April 22, 2010.[10] The game was released on October 26, 2010. The game received poor reviews from critics and fans.
On February 9, 2011, Activision announced that the series would not feature an installment in the 2011 calendar year. This was due to poor reviews and sales of recent games in the series. Tony Hawk has since stated that "we're going to do something probably for next year but I can't give too much away" regarding the 2012 calendar year.[11] Activision's CEO of publishing has stated that they believe in the staying power of the Tony Hawk franchise, claiming that Tony Hawk "is a lasting icon. He has that Michael Jordan-ish or Jordan-esque staying power, seemingly."[12] A remake, Pro Skater HD, was released on July 18, 2012.
On October 30, 2013 in an interview with CNBC, Hawk discussed plans for a future entry to the series.[13] Hawk later confirmed that the new entry to the series would be a mobile exclusive spin-off, Shred Session.[14] Shortly after its soft launch in 2014 the game was postponed indefinitely and removed from the markets it had been released in.[15]
The first main entry to the series since 2007 was revealed in an article published by Game Informer on May 5, 2015. The tenth entry in the series, Pro Skater 5, was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 29, 2015, with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions to release on December 15, 2015. The game is said to blend the old school mechanics of the game with new twists and includes a new set of levels 'packed with objectives and missions [that] you can complete solo or with friends via online co-op and competitive play'.[16] Players will be able to 'level up' their character, play online or offline and create skate parks that can be shared with the rest of the world. The game will feature many professional skaters, old and new, with Tony Hawk returning as the title character, as well as 'a new generation of skaters influenced by the original titles'.

The first five games in the series received critical acclaim for their unique gameplay and varied soundtracks. Pro Skater 2 was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, according to GameRankings, it is one of the highest rated video games of all time and one of the highest ranking video games of fifth generation for PlayStation, holding the score of 94.75%.[24] It also holds a score of 98, making it one of the highest rated video games of all time across all consoles and platforms, on Metacritic, ranked second behind The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.[2]
Pro Skater 3 sold 2.4 million copies worldwide and received a widespread critical acclaim, being one of the few games that has received a perfect "10" score from GameSpot, and the top rated PS2 game on the review aggregate website Metacritic, with an average score of 97/100, tying with Grand Theft Auto III.[3][4] IGN stated that "Tony Hawk's gaming legacy is one he can be proud of" amidst other video game incarnations of celebrities.[142]
After the release of Underground 2, the games have been slightly less well received. IGN ranked Hawk on its February 2009 list of the top ten video game characters who should die, rationalizing that "we are in no way advocating the death of the real Tony Hawk... But killing him in one of his final game outings – that would be just plain hilarious."[143]
