Ton Duc Thang University (Vietnamese language: Đại học Tôn Đức Thắng) is a university in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The President is Mr Le Vinh Danh. The university was founded in 1997, under the management of Viet Nam General Federation of Labor and named after Tôn Đức Thắng, who was Vice-President of Vietnam from 1960 to 1969 under the presidency of Ho Chi Minh and later became President of Vietnam from 1969 to 1980. The University provide basic to university-level of 23 specialities, including: technology, techniques, social sciences, economics, business, foreign languages, arts. Total enrollment is around 22,500.

History

Forerunner of Ton Duc Thang University is Ton Duc Thang Private Technology University founded by the decision 787/TTg-QĐ on 24/09/1997 of Vietnam Prime Minister. With the rapid growth of the University, to have the legal status which fit with its nature (is the University of Union and totally no factor of privatization), the Prime Minister released the decision 18/2003/TTg-QĐ changing its name to Ton Duc Thang semi-public University, under the management of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City.

On 22/06/2006, Ton Duc Thang semi-public University moved the form to public University with self-financing mechanism.

On 11/6/2008, Mr Tan Dung Nguyen, the Prime Minister of Vietnam, signed the decision 747/QĐ-TTg changing the name of Ton Duc Thang Semi-Public University under the management of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to Ton Duc Thang University and under the management of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour.
