Tomasz Zdebel (born 25 May 1973) is a retired Polish-German footballer[1] who played as a defensive midfielder. He was active in his active career in Germany, Belgium and Turkey. From 2000 to 2003, he played for the Polish national team.

Early years

Zdebel was born and grew up in the Upper Silesian city of Katowice (German: Kattowitz).[2] His father was a football player, but the family could not survive with the income of the father as a football player, so he worked as a miner during the week.[3] In 1988, he emigrated at the age of 14[2] or 15[4] to Düsseldorf.[5]

Carrer

Zdebel started playing football in the local club GKS Katowice. After the emigration to Germany, he joined the youth team of Fortuna Düsseldorf, but his active career began in 1990 at Rot-Weiss Essen. A year later, Essen's license was revoked and thus the team was relegated from the Bundesliga. Zdebel stayed at the club. In 1992 Zdebel joined 1. FC Köln and played initially for the Reserves of the billy goats. In 1993, he debuted for the first team. He was considered a "playmaker talent", later an "eternal talent" and "sloppy genius".[4]

So he left Cologne in 1997 and moved to the then reigning Belgian champions Lierse SK. In the very first season with the Flames Zdebel reached the seventh place and participated with Lierse SK in the 1997–98 UEFA Champions League. In the group stage, the Belgians dropped out with five defeats and one draw. A season later, Lierse again reached the seventh place in the league and won the Belgian Cup. In the following seasons, Lierse reached the eighth and then the tenth place. Zdebel played as central midfielder for Lierse, but he also played in the defence.[4]

In 2001, Zdebel moved to Turkey and signed with Gençlerbirliği S.K.. In 2003, he returned to Germany and joined VfL Bochum.
