Tinana, Queensland

Tinana is a suburb of Maryborough, Queensland, Australia within the local government authority of Fraser Coast Region.[1] It is on the south-western bank of the Mary River.

History

The name Tinana is derived from the name of the creek, which in turn was named in 1852 by surveyor William Labatt. The name is believed to be in honour of a Maori chief Tinanah, who was known to the botanist John Carne Bidwill from his time in New Zealand in 1840-41.[1] Although originally a separate town, Tinana is now effectively a suburb of Maryborough.

Education

Tinana State School was established in the suburb in 1875.[2]
