The Voodoo Trombone Quartet is the creation of Paul Thorpe. They are currently releasing music through their own Braces Tower Recordings imprint. Previously, they were signed to the record label Freshly Squeezed Music.
Prior to the success of The Voodoo Trombone Quartet, Thorpe was singer in Loveblobs signed to Wiiija Records and Nork Law, releasing a single on Oxford’s Shifty Disco and recording material for Eastwest Records. Following on, he produced a series of mash-ups under the guise of Braces Tower, using material from diverse sources such as Sesame Street and the Shipping Forecast. "Special Child", a bootleg mashing The Specials with Destiny's Child, appeared on the infamous Boom Selection CD and DJ Food's Raiding the 21st Century mix. Other mashes made it onto the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show Playlist and been played all over the world. Monotonik released two well-received downloadable EPs featuring original material - Psshh and Pasteism.
Voodoo Trombone Quartet’s self-titled debut album was released in June 2005 to critical acclaim. Following the release of the album, the VTQ was brought into the live arena by manifesting itself as an eight piece band. Further VTQ material has appeared on compilations for Record Kicks (Italy), as remixes for ESL Music and on the official Arsenal album.
In 2007, the band contributed a track "VTQ from the Block", to Bearded magazine's Beardaid.
The Voodoo Trombone Quartet's music has been heard on numerous TV and radio programmes, including Ugly Betty, The Paper (MTV), Being Human, Don't Tell the Bride, Sport Relief Challenge, 5 Live, The Paul O'Grady Show, 4 Stands Up (Radio 4). Currently, "Do It Your Own Way" from the second album, "...Again" is the theme tune to John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme on BBC Radio 4.
Debut single "Voodoo JuJu" appears in the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet.
