The Passion is a Dutch passion play, held every Maundy Thursday since 2011 in a different city each year. The event is broadcast live on Dutch TV. In 2015 the event was broadcast on radio as well.
The event began as a collaboration between the broadcasters EO and RKK (nowadays between EO and KRO-NCRV) and the local community. The event is considered a missionary chance to pay attention to Easter for the collaborating organizations.
Creation
The event and television is partly inspired by the local event, the Manchester Passion, held on Good Friday and broadcast by BBC Three. The production company Eye2Eye Media brought the event to the Netherlands. The first Dutch version was held at the market square in Gouda with a live-broadcast on TV on Maundy Thursday 2011. It proved successful and new editions followed in the next years.
Feature
Structure
On Maundy Thursday, three days prior to Easter, the event is staged in a main square in a Dutch city.
On this square a stage is built where Dutch celebrities tell the story of Easter, on basis of certain passages around the traditional story of Jesus, interspersed with live performances of actual Dutch pop songs. Music by Marco Borsato, BLØF, Guus Meeuwis and Nick & Simon has already been used.
Meanwhile, a group of 40 people bears a huge white cross towards the main podium in the center square. The cross has a weight of around 400 kilograms and is six meters tall. The event can also be followed online, using a second screen on the website. Here people can also join the procession virtually.
The Passion is een project tussen de omroepen EO en KRO-NCRV, de Protestant en Roman Catholicism churches in the Netherlands and the Nederlands Bijbelgenootschap. The goal is to bring the Passion of Jesus's attention and make them accessible to the new generation.
The location
The host city is selected annually on the basis of various factors.
- The recognition among the Dutch population. A local theme that ties in with the story of suffering and resurrection, can help. For example, the 2015 edition, staged in Enschede, was connected to the coupled with the fireworks disaster, 15 years ago in 2015 - and the subsequent rebuilding of the new district of Roombeek.
- The presence of a large space that can carry up to 20,000 and 25,000 people. In this space the stage is built. Also, an overflow area is required to carry the overflow of people.
- The ability to record the different scenes.
- The willingness of the city to provide both financial and practical contributions.[1]
The first three editions were all held in the province of South Holland. The fourth edition, held in Groningen was held, was the first outside of the Randstad. Since that year the locations are geographically spread throughout all of the country. The next edition of 2016 will be staged in Amersfoort.
