The Miniaturist is the successful, internationally published debut novel of English actress and author Jessie Burton.[2] The Miniaturist was first published in 2014. It took over four years to write, and was the subject of a publishing bidding war in April 2013 at the London Book Fair.[2]

Set in Amsterdam in 1686/7, the novel is inspired by Petronella Oortman's doll's house now at the Rijksmuseum. It does not otherwise attempt to be a biographical novel.[3]
