The Mekanics (often styled as The MeKanics) are an American record production and songwriting duo consisting of Michael "Foreign Teck" Hernandez and Rico "5 Star" Evans. A trademark of The MeKanics production is a female voice saying "The MeKanics" twice at the beginning of their songs.
History
2011–present: Beginnings and success
Hernandez and Richard "Remedy" Duran first formed the group in West Palm Beach, Florida. They won the Beast Of The Beats V contest in 2011, and were signed by Monster.[1][2][3] In 2012, they met up with Yelawolf after the competition and recorded two tracks one of them being the "Hammer Time" record which featured a verse from Rittz and was released in January 2013.[4][5] In 2013, Duran went solo to pursue a career in Electronic dance music. Then Tecknique he got production on Wale's album The Gifted. The production came about when Hernandez was in Miami and got called by Spiff to make new beats asap, while Spiff was already in the studio with Wale and Rick Ross. He left Miami and went to West Palm to send them a folder of thirty beats. When Wale picked the beat, Teck never thought he would select it and made it years ago. Two months after he sent him the batch, Wale told him it was going to be on the album and it happened to be his first album placement.[6]
He also produced most of the songs on Tory Lanez's mixtape Conflicts Of My Soul: The 416 Story which was released on August 26, 2013. Tecknique met with Spiff TV and went to Orlando to meet fellow producer Rico "5 Star" Evans in the studio, who later became a member of The MeKanics.[7] The MeKanics were also featured on Hot New Hip Hop's "9 Producers You're Still Sleeping On" in 2014.[8] Tecknique and Spiff TV created their own label called the Foreign Mob, and their first signee was producer Canary Julz.[9]
