The Lightbox is a museum in Woking, Surrey, England, which mainly focuses on art, sculpture and inventions, as well as having a permanent exhibit on the History of Woking. It was opened on 15 September 2007 and is the home of both the Ingram Collection of Modern British Art and the Joan Hurst Collection.[1][2][3][4]

Overview

Located near to the centre of Woking on a thin strip of land between the Basingstoke Canal and Victoria Way dual carriageway, The Lightbox was built specifically as a home for the Ingram Collection, formed by local media entrepreneur Chris Ingram.[1] The project itself had started in 1993 when a group of local volunteers decided to try and establish a cultural centre in the Woking area.[5][6] The building itself was designed by architecture firm Marks Barfield, and constructed for £4.1 million.[2] It opened in September 2007, and won the Art Fund Prize for museums and galleries in 2008.[1] The Lightbox holds charitable status and is part-funded by Woking Borough Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, and Arts Council England.[1][7]

The Lightbox holds a number of temporary exhibitions, and has a permanent exhibition focussing on the history of Woking, entitled "Woking's Story".[8]
