The Idol (Arabic: الآيدول) is a 2015 Palestinian drama film directed by Hany Abu-Assad.[1][2] It was shown in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.[3]
Plot
The Idol, tells the true story of Mohammed Assaf, wedding singer from a refugee camp in Gaza who went to win 2013's Arab Idol singing competition.
As a young boy in Gaza, he dreams of singing in the Cairo Opera House and for the world to hear his voice. After finding the hotel where Arab Idol trials were taking place had closed its doors, Assaf climbed over the walls and ended up singing to the other contestants. Eventually, Assaf made it to the finals in Beirut and won Arab Idol.

Production
The Idol was partially filmed on location in Gaza, the first feature film to be shot there in decades, along with Jenin, Amman, Beirut and Cairo. The Idol was produced in association with the Doha Film Institute and the support of the Netherlands Film Fund.[4]
