Critical Reception
It received the 1995 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award.[1] Terri Windling selected it as one of the best fantasy books of 1994, as well as the best fantasy first novel, describing it as "a fine work of American magical realism . . . a richly mythical novel.".[2]
