The Funeral of Gustav III

The decorations at the funeral

The funeral of Gustav III took place on the 14th of May 1792, after the king had died the 29th of March as a result of the injuries he sustained when he was shot by Jacob Johan Anckarström during the murder on the masquerade ball at the Royal Opera in Stockholm the 16th of March.

The funeral itself was held in Riddarholmskyrkan, which had been decorated in a grand manner.

To the funeral, Joseph Martin Kraus had composed a funeral march to the text of Carl Gustaf Leopold that was performed by solo singers, choir and orchestra from the Royal Opera under the direction of the composer himself.
