Josh "The Fat Jew" Ostrovsky[1] is an American pop culture commentator, writer, plus-sized model, and self-proclaimed Z list celebrity.[2][3][4][5] Ostrovsky gained fame in 2014 with an Instagram account that now has garnered almost 8 million followers.
Early life
Born on Manhattan's Upper West Side, Ostrovsky attended Trevor Day School. He describes himself as "super gay as a youth" despite being a heterosexual male.[2][6] He attended Skidmore College and New York University but was expelled from both[2] before enrolling at the State University of New York at Albany[2][6] "to hang out with Italian dudes who had never met a Jew... just for the LOLs.” Ostrovsky later graduated from SUNY Albany with a degree in journalism.[6]
Career
Known for his outlandish antics,[2][7] Ostrovsky worked on the E! Channel as a correspondent interviewing celebrities[8][9] and was a member of genre-bending rap group Team Facelift, who was signed to Duckdown Records.[10] The group's sound was described by the New York Post as a cross between Barbra Streisand and Wu-Tang Clan.[11] He has also been linked to DJ/ Producer Dillon Francis, appearing as part of his raucous live show.[12]
After the group's disbandment in 2010, Ostrovsky left music and began focusing solely on entertainment and plus-size modeling. His pet Cavalier King Charles Spaniel "Toast" also has a sizable social media presence on Instagram, appearing at many fashion events and having her own line of accessories.[13][14] He appears as a contributor on Bloomberg Television, has created video campaigns for such brands as Virgin Mobile, Burger King, Bud Light, and Beats Electronics,[7] and has many followers on social media.[2] In June 2015, Ostrovsky, in coordination with Babe Walker, introduced a wine[15][16] called White Girl Rosé. He currently hosts a radio show on Apple Music Beats 1 called "Money, Pizza, Respect." Ostrovsky published his first book, Money Pizza Respect in November 2015.[5]
In 2015, Josh Ostrovsky signed with Scott Lipps and One Management as the worlds first official plus sized male model.[17] "I just want to inspire people of my size and my gender to be comfortable in their own skin, because it's OK to have a mediocre body and very, very high cholesterol, as long as you look great doing it," says Ostrovsky. One of Josh's first large features was in May 2015's edition of Inked (magazine),[18] where he recreated some of the most famous nude celebrity photos in history.[19]
In October 2015, Ostrovsky starred in DNCE's music video for their song "Cake by the Ocean."
Plagiarism accusations
Ostrovsky has admitted to plagiarism and joke theft on multiple occasions.[20][21][22] In early August 2015, comedian Davon Magwood wrote an open letter to Ostrovsky for posting one of Magwood's jokes without attribution.[23][24] Ostrovsky later credited Magwood for the joke.[24] The controversy drew attention to the cancellation of Ostrovsky's Comedy Central pilot,[25] which a representative from the network said happened months prior.[26]
