The Fabulous Country Music Sound of George Jones

The Fabulous Country Music Sound of George Jones is the 1962 country music studio album released by George Jones in August 1962. The second of eight LP releases put out during 1962, the album was Jones twelfth overall studio release. It was Jones' eighth album release on the Starday label, though he wasn't signed to it at the time of the LP's production. It contains songs dated back to 1955 while with Starday, to his second #1 hit with Mercury in 1960.

This album, compiled by Starday, contained many of former Mercury-Starday recordings, many previously unissued. The lead track, The Window Up Above was recorded by Johnny Paycheck or "Donny Young." Though the album did not chart, it is noteworthy for containing many of formerly unheard of Jones songs.

Background

During the 1960's, Starday Records (now completely absorbed by Mercury) began repackaging multiple unnissued songs onto 12-track LP's, that would also include some hits. This album, The Fabulous Country Music Sound, was the first of these LP's, and was produced by former Starday president, Don Pierce.

The opening track "Yes, I Know Why" was originally recorded by Webb Pierce, and covered by Jones in August 1956, shortly after "Wasted Words" during the same session. "Window Up Above" became one Jones' most requested numbers, however, this album's version was a re-recording by George's "Jones Boys band" bass player Johnny "Danny Young" Paycheck recorded during sometime in 1961. One of the faster tracks on the album, "Heartbreak Hotel," was a rock-n-roll recording cut during the same session that produced only rock release "Rock It" in March 1956. "Go Away With Me" was recorded sometime between the Fall 1957 and January 1957. This album's version of Jones first ever recording of "No Money in This Deal," was a recording cut August 1956.
