Bitter Harvest is an upcoming Canadian epic romantic-drama film directed by George Mendeluk, which he co-wrote some scenes with some minor dialog changes on the shooting script collaborating with Richard Bachynsky Hoovers original script. The film stars Max Irons, Samantha Barks, Barry Pepper and Terence Stamp.[1] It is set during the Holodomor, a man-made famine that killed millions of Ukrainians.

Plot

The story centres on Yuriy (Irons), an artistic soul born into a family of Ukrainian Cossacks, who struggles to win the approval of his grandfather Ivan (Stamp) and father Yaroslav (Pepper), and to win the heart of Natalka (Barks). His life changes with the invasion of the Red Army and the subsequent persecution of his family and fellow countrymen as Stalin’s regime of terror extends across Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

Production

On October 16, 2013 Aneurin Barnard joined the cast of the film as Mykola, a young man growing up in rural Ukraine.[2] The film covers the Holodomor, a man-made famine that killed millions of Ukrainians. Producer Ian Ihnatowicz stated, "Given the importance of what happened, and that few outside Ukraine knew about it because it had been covered up, the story of this genocide needed to be told. It's relevant today. [...] It's ironic that before we even finished our film we had yet another example of Russia's aggression against Ukraine."[3]

The cast also includes Tamer Hassan and Tom Austen.[4]

Filming

Filming was underway in Ukraine by November 15, 2013.[5] On February 5, 2014 Variety reported that the shoot had just wrapped in Kiev.[1] In early 2014, post-production continued at London's Pinewood Studios, using the official James Bond filming tank for under-water filming. Skyfall editor Stuart Baird and SFX teams worked on the film in post production.
