The Critic (Adelaide magazine)

The Critic was a weekly literary and news magazine published in Adelaide, South Australia from 1897 to 1924, remembered as the paper in which C. J. Dennis began his literary career, and was later its editor.

Vol. I No. 1 was dated 25 September 1897, price 6d. (six pence).

The last issue, of 28 May 1924, was of 28 pages, again priced 6d. The magazine was succeeded by The Gossip on 5 June 1924, priced 5d.

Editors included C. J. Dennis c. 1904, succeeded by Conrad Eitel in 1905.[1]

The Critic was described by a contemporary as a "society paper", and ascribed its decline to the inclusion by the mass circulation dailies of "social pages".[2]
