Thames High School is a public high school in Thames, Waikato, New Zealand. Established in 1880, it is the second oldest secondary school in the former Auckland Province.

Academics

Thames offers programs in several academic disciplines, such as English, Humanities, Languages, Mathematics, and Science. In addition, it offers courses in Drama, Physical Education, Technology, and Music. An ESOL program for non-native English speakers is also available.

There are many foreign-language offerings at Thames. At all grade levels, Māori language courses are offered, with emphasis on developing confidence in speaking Māori and on an appreciation of Māori culture and values.[3] In addition, two students annually participate in a Foreign Exchange Student program for eight weeks.

The school has a special needs program. The Learning Centre for special needs in literacy and numeracy has a very low Student/Teacher ratio. Thames students also have access to TVAEC (Thames Valley Alternative Education Centre), an off–site provider of education based in Paeroa for students with special needs from Thames, Hauraki Plains College and Paeroa College.

Thames seniors have access to Gateway, a student work program designed to educate students about real-life work.[4]

Thames High School's Distance Learning programs for tourism, early childhood education, art history, classical studies, French, Pharmacy, Journalism, Philosophy, Māori and agriculture include collaborations with the Correspondence School, the Open Polytechnic, Otago Polytechnic and Travel Careers and Training Ltd. [5]

Thames' Technology offerings include Graphics, Workshop Metal, Wood Shop, Electronics, Automotive, Furniture Making, and Fabric.[6] Junior students are required to take a course in Food Technology as part of a mandatory junior-year course rotation.[7]
