The Texas Legends are an American professional basketball team based in Frisco, Texas. They play in the Central Division in the NBA Development League (NBA D-League), a minor league basketball organization owned and run by the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Legends play their home games at the Dr Pepper Arena. The Legends are affiliated with the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA.
History
On June 18, 2009, the NBDL awarded the city of Frisco, Texas, part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, with a relocated franchise.[1][2] Previously known as the Colorado 14ers, the Legends began play in the 2010-11 season and play at the Dr Pepper Arena.
The Legends accepted submissions for its nickname on their website.[3][4] On April 10, 2010, the Legends announced their name at a press conference in Frisco.[5][6]
On November 5, 2009, women's basketball pioneer Nancy Lieberman was introduced as the Legends' head coach. She is the first woman to lead a men's professional basketball team.[7][8][9]
On October 3, 2011, Del Harris was announced as the Legends' new head coach.[10]
On July 8, 2015 Nick Van Exel was announced as the Legends' new head coach replacing Eduardo Najera.
Ownership
The team is owned by Texas D-League Management, LLC, which is principally owned by Donnie Nelson, general manager and President of Basketball operations for the Dallas Mavericks and son of former Golden State Warriors head coach Don Nelson.[11] The ownership group also includes Evan Wyly, former chairman of Green Mountain Energy.[11] Past 14ers owner Tim Wiens retains a minority stake in the team.
