"Teri Meri", meaning Yours and Mine, is an Hindi song from the film Bodyguard, starring Salman Khan[1] and Kareena Kapoor.[2] The song was sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal.[3] The song was composed by Himesh Reshammiya, while its lyrics were penned by Shabbir Ahmed. This "Teri Meri" song was released along with other tracks on 27 July 2011.
Composition and picturization
Teri Meri is a sad romantic song partially inspired from a Romanian folk carol (which also featured as the 2009 song named 'La Betleem colo-n jos' sung by Cleopatra Stratan, a Romanian singer), a poignant love performed by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal. The song is high on Sufi touch, while it scores on vocals.[4][5] The song is also available in remix and reprise version.[6]
The song is a romantic number from film Bodyguard. Teri Meri was picturised on Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor. It was choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant. The songs music is a remake of a background music in the film HOUSE OF FLYING DRAGONS
Reception
Ruchika Kher of the Indo-Asian News Service reviewed the song as moderately paced and a quite average song.[4]
The Times of India placed Teri Meri among the top 10 songs of 2011.[7] The song was non-mover for 19 weeks at No. 1 on The Official Asian Download Chart show on BBC Asian Network, hosted by Bobby Friction. It went on to being one of the few songs to have been in the chart for over an astonishing 30 weeks.[8] The song had also won awards for Shreya Ghoshal in the 13th IIFA Awards, BIG Star Entertainment Awards 2011[9] and 2012 Apsara Awards for Best Female Playback Singer.
Plagiarism claims
There are several claims that this song is a plagiarism of a Traditional Romanian Christmas carol, called "La Betleem colo-n jos" (Down in Bethleem), but according to the composer Himesh Reshammiya, this song is a pure Indian raag based composition and copyrights were bought.[10]
In regard to the plagiarism claims there is an online petition addressed to The Union of Romanian Composers and Musicians - The Author Rights division with 233 signatures raised to date titled "Petition against the Meri Teri song; a plagiature of the Romanian song <<La Betleem colo-n jos>>"[11] Proof supporting this accusation is claimed to be found in Electrecord's record archive featuring the National Romanian Chamber Choir "Madrigal" performing this song 30 years ago.[12][13] There are also countless interpretations of the carol by different artists which can be found on popular music/videos sites, such as trilulilu, YouTube.[14][15]
